Jungang Market & pork soup Tongyeong 통영 중앙전통시장 도산돼지국밥

DAY 4 OF 5-DAY stay in Tongyeong

After exploring the Seopirang murals, I wandered into Tongyeong Jungang Market (통영중앙전통시장) to get some late lunch. The market is a bustling town-centre affair, I guess competing with a few other large markets in this harbour town.

I had it in my head to get more pork soup (dwaeji-gukbap – 돼지국밥). I went to Dosan Dwaejigukbap (도산돼지국밥), a very ‘local’ looking place that seemed to have a bar table in front of the restaurant, but the lady insisted I go inside. It was very basic inside (good sign!), and I was the only customer (it was around 3 pm). This version of the soup had a great tasting broth, and used less meaty parts, and more of the intestine parts of the pig; not my favourite (used in grilled gopchang – 곱창) but it tasted pretty good to me!

After my hearty soup and feeling refreshed, I wandered a bit through a different part of Dopirang (I was there yesterday), and took some more photos. I ended up back on the other side of the market and bought some of the local sweet snack called gulbbang (꿀빵), before grabbing a bus back to the hostel.
