Geumodo, Yeosu 금오도 여수

Day 2 of 4-day trip to Yeosu

On our second day, we took a ferry to Geumodo (금오도), an island south of Yeosu. We explored, hiked and ate. That’s it!

Our breakfast at the hostel wasn’t what we were expecting based on the photos of eggs and bacon; it had all been replaced with covid-safe kimbab in a box, and cup noodles~! At least the coffee machine worked…and made decent coffee.

We got to the ferry port too late to take the ferry we wanted so left around 12:30. The trip was fine and the island was nice to drive around; not many cars and great weather. Our first stop was a part of the Geumodo Birong-gil(?) hiking trail (금오도비렁길4코스), on the south side of the island. This was a wooded coastal trail which passed lots of little view points along the way. The trail goes around the whole island, but this isn’t a hiking trip, so we kept it short. This part of the trail is accessible from Simpohang harbour (심포항). The village was quiet and quaint.

Next, we drove to an attached island and to Ando beach (안도해수욕장) a lovely sandy and rocky place. You could easily spend the day there and camp in the trees behind and you wouldn’t see a soul. It looked like there’s a National Park Campsite there, though it was deserted, locked up and rundown. Definitely off season! And I didn’t take any photos…

We then drove back the way we came to one of the larger villages to hunt for some food. On the way, we (I!) wanted to stop at the suspension bridge (I like bridges).

There were quite a few places to eat by the harbour and we went to the one not playing the loud music called Yeonam Sikdang Minbak (여남식당민박). On the menu was basic baekban (백반), side dishes with some eel soup. Tasted fresh and good!

So that was a super-quick stop at Geumodo. Come early and hike more, take a tent or rent a pension and explore; it’s a lovely place to chill.
