Gatbawi rock, Maritime Museum, Babo Madang 갓바위

I took a trip to Mokpo; drove to Jindo Island, explored the Mokpo on foot and by a few cable cars, and drove to the spectacular Wolchulsan Mountain for a day hike.

DAY 4 OF 4-DAY TRIP to Mokpo

I got a bus to the eastern part of Mokpo near where I went to the cinema last night to check out a local coastal rock feature called Gatbawi (갓바위) and a museum. The first stop was, of course, coffee. This coastal area and promenade is next to Dalmatchi Park (달맞이공원) and seems quite new. There are restaurants and coffee shops along the front and I stopped at Dalboardrae? or Story? coffee shop (달보드레). I sat on the terrace next door for a bit before walking west towards Gatbawi. The rock is quite interesting and it’s seen from a walkway in the sea. After that I went up the hill behind and above it.

That didn’t take long, so I walked past the Maritime Museum (국립해양문화재연구소), saw it was free to get in, so thought ‘What the hell, eh?’ It was quite interesting, a lot of the displays focussing on a recovered wreck and all the finds inside.

I took a bus back to the western side of the city to a hilly village area which has murals and a connection to a Korean drama. I’m not sure the name of the place but there is an observation deck called Babo Madang (바보마당) and the drama-related shop is called Yeonnhee’s Supermarket. The streets are named Borimadang-ro 22 (보리마당로22번길). I wandered around the tiny alleys and hills and got a coffee and macron at a place called Babo Macaron (바보마카롱). which looks over to the sea.

I walked back towards the train station through the fish market and shopping area. This could be a destination if I come back with Romana. That is pretty much the end of this trip. I enjoyed Mokpo a lot and will definitely come back; there are islands to the east to explore and more coastal walks nearby.
