Jongmyo Shrine 종묘 & Modern hanok

Jongmyo

I first noticed Jongmyo shrine when I was on the rooftop of Sewoon Plaza. It’s a place where late kings were commemorated in the days of old. I went on a day off and then wnet around the back area and found some modern hanok being built.

It’s was about 1,000 won to get in and you walk along a path of spirits, a stone walkway that is raised in the middle. Humans aren’t supposed to use the middle raised portion. There are a few out buildings and garden features along the way and it makes for a nice walk.

The shrine building and plaza are very large and I think they consist of 19 chambers led to by a giant forecourt. Humans are supposed to use the side entrance (even the royalty).

This place was actually used in the Korean zombie drama Kingdom for one of the later battle scene in season 2.

When I left, I went to the west side and discovered two new buildings being constructed from wood which I guess you’d call modern hanok (한옥). No one in them yet but interesting nonetheless. I’d love to see inside them.
