Beautiful Udo, Jeju 우도

Udo

We took a scooter around Udo. This was a winter trip in two parts; a solo three days, then four days with Romana. This is part two of today and our second stop was Udo (우도).

Day 4 of 7 winter days on Jeju

After our Antoinette breakfast, we drove east to the harbour to get the ferry (next to the famous Seongsan Ilchulbong, one of the big Jeju spots). The ferries were less frequent in this winter (pandemic) season but frequent enough (at least one an hour?).

There seem to be two main arrival ports and we stopped at the northern one, Haumokdonghang(? 하우목동항) harbour. RIght off the boat there are places to rent scooter (petrol and electric) and a few type of covered two-person vehicles (electric and petrol). We went old-school and got a scooter that cost 25,000 won for the afternoon. On reflection, I’ll get a quieter (silent!) electric scooter next time!

We drove clockwise up and around the island and cut through at some points. It was very cool. Our first stop was coffee (actually, toilet) for me at Pongdang (퐁당). Kakao Map link.

You can pretty much stop anywhere to enjoy the scenery so that’s what we did! Its mainly a landscape of flat farmland with one big hill at one end of the island. If I stayed here, I’d absolutely love to walk each and every road.

Some areas are more touristy than others but that only really means a slightly higher concentration of places to stop at. We made a stop at Hagosudong beach (하고수동해변) but we didn’t stop to eat anywhere since the ferry leaves at 5 pm; we had a convenience store snack and a beer.

We made one more stop to see if we could find any of the famous Jeju female free-divers/fishers but there was nothing but a few island small boat trips.

I have done this many years ago with my sister on her first visit to Korea; need to dig those photos out and blog! There are a lot of places to see and spots to chill out at, for food, drinking, swimming, etc. I definitely want to return and stay at least one night here, preferably in a warmer season. There is accommodation and friends of ours camped a few nights there earlier this year. There’s a smaller island just off it called Biyangdo.

If it’s just for a day trip, I recommend going earlier in the day than we did just so you can see more of the island.
