Day 4 of 4-day trip to Jeju
On out last day, we went to Daeyoo Land (대유ATV수렵사격랜드) to shoot guns, Sanbangsan to meet a calligraphy artist friend of Romana’s, then we went to the Osulloc green tea farm.
If you want to shoot shotguns, go to a shooting range. This one at Daeyoo Land had shotguns, hand guns and machine guns; quite the experience. My first gun was a chrome Magnum .45 which was a lot harder to shoot than Dirty Harry makes it look! Pulling the trigger without cocking it first took a lot of strength and resulted in me shooting quite wide off the mark. The assistant recommended pulling the hammer back first which means when you shoot, you’re just releasing the the hammer. This resulted more accurate shots. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any photos of the gun. As we were waiting around, I saw one guy order a whole magazine of ammo for a Heckler Koch machine gun, one of those types you see special forces use in the movies. One clicked in, he unloaded to whole clip in one go while his girlfriend looked on from behind. Must have been quite a buzz although she didn’t look that impressed! I thought about doing it, but didn’t want to pay 30,000 won. Next we went to the other side of the range where we could shoot clay pigeons. I went first and wasn’t very accurate, even though I’d done this before in the Scouts in the UK. Romana was much better and impressed the people waiting behind us; ooh! Ahh!
We had lunch next on the road leading to Sanbangsan (산방산) where Romana was going to meet her friend. We took some photos in front of the tall cliffs of the mountain. The weather was quite hazy and humid. The woman in the restaurant wouldn’t let us sit outside; shame, because there was a fantastic view of Sanbangsan from the porch. Guess she didn’t want to serve us outside!
After lunch we went to meet Romana’s friend. She was having a calligraphy exhibition at Lazy Box Coffee right under Sanbangsan. Her artist name is HeyDay. Here’s another Instagram page. And here’s her Tumblr. We bought some drinks and had a chat. While chatting, HeyDay wrote two messages for us which was nice of her. We bought a set of Jeju postcards taken by a photographer friend of hers which she had added calligraphy to. They were very good and we put them up on our living room wall. It’s a nice place with views down to the sea. I came back to this place years later and had coffee at one or two shops along.
Our final stop was the Osulloc Green Tea Garden and Museum (오설록 녹차밭). I was interested in seeing huge green tea terraces but this wasn’t really that kind of place. There were a lot of green tea fields which were pleasant to walk in but nothing too epic. I think there are other green tea fields in other parts of Jeju which I might visit another time. Also, there are some on the Korean mainland in the south west.
Sad as ever to leave the island, but I did get a funny picture of Romana preparing for the flight back home…
