Chicken soup on a stream 물레방아휴게소 백숙 – Yangyang, Korea

The ford at Mulle Banga
DAY 2 OF OUR 3-DAY ROAD TRIP

After our adventure at Yongso Falls, we drove back the way we had come to go to a restaurant we’d seen on the way up. It was called Mulle Banga rest stop(?) (물레방아휴게소) and had my favourite style of Korean chicken soup on the menu. The main draw, however, was that it was located just off the road on a stream. The stream flows over the entrance drive way, so you need to ford across in your car or on foot to get in and out.

There were tables set up out front in the water of the ford, and the stream flowed to the right of the building from some falls about fifty metres behind the building. There were also tables set up along the side of the stream too, where you can paddle and play while waiting for your food. A larger pool had been created near the entrance where you could even swim a little (three strokes!).

I’ve posted a few entries on this type of chicken soup – baeksuk (백숙) so you might think this is the only thing I eat in Korea! Not so … but I do love it! It’s hearty and delicious and I doubt I’ll get bored of diving into a whole boiled chicken. This place made a pretty good one and we were happy sitting right by the stream with a cold beer and cooling off in the mountain water.

After our lovely meal, we headed towards our accommodation, stopping by Cafe Seoraksan Road (카페설악산로) which had a garden on the road leading to Seoraksan park, but didn’t really have a view of the mountains. It was a pleasant enough place in a newly built wooded building with decent coffee and cakes.
