The idyllic Darangyi (Daraengi) Village lies on the southern coast of the west side of Namhae island. I went in the evening after a rainy day, then again the next day when the restaurants were open. Namhae is a quiet and pretty island on the south coast of Korea, with Yeosu on the west and Tongyeong on the east. I spent a four days on Namhae-do, and here’s what I got up to!
Before coming here, I was visiting rainy-day places around the island, which you can read about here.
Darangyi Village
This is a small village famous for it pretty, terraced farmland, hilly, windy streets, and coastal views. I’d been before with Romana many years ago and remember being charmed by the place.
Wednesday evening
When I got there in the evening, the rain had stopped and the clouds and mist made the place look beautiful. I wandered around a took lots of photos. Most places had shut for the day, so I didn’t get a coffee. I went back to the guesthouse after an hour or so.
Thursday midday
I returned the next day after visiting a local botanical garden. I got a coffee at a place overlooking the whole village before descending again. The weather was now clear and bright and I was able to see all the mountains behind the village. I walked down to the coast and onto the rocks.
I walked back up to get some lunch at Daraengi Matjip (다랭이맛집). There were tables on the terrace that looked out over the village and to the sea. They had a selection of seafood dishes and some pancakes. I risked something I’ve heard of: sea squirt (멍게) on rice. I didn’t enjoy it; too much ‘taste of the sea’!
I found a coffee shop with a nice lawn and view out to the sea and the terraces. It was a decently made coffee too. This was Barista Kim. He was very friendly and I think there were vacation houses on the land too. Must be good to spend the night at the location.
I then headed to the bus station to return the SOCAR. On the way, I dropped by the garlic museum, which was about 20 minutes of garlic related fun! I parked the car and wandered up and down the main street before getting the bus. For some reason the ticket I bought online didn’t have a barcode on it, meaning you need to get a paper ticket from a kiosk at the station; why?! Anyway, long but uneventful journey back to Seoul, and a great Namhae trip despite the rain.
