Day 2 of our 5-day, end of summer road-trip
On our second day in Hwangdo, me and Romana drove around the main island of Anmyeondo. Our first stop was Sambong Beach (삼봉해수욕장). It’s a wide, long beach with rock pools at one end, and we spent a long time there messing with the hermit crabs. It was cloudy and we didn’t wear sunscreen…oops…painful later. I didn’t get any pictures here. We had a picnic before hunger made us leave. The area nearby has camping grounds, showers and basic coffee places.
We drove north next to the Daehan Sashimi Centre (대한회센터) for some seafood. We had a plate of skate(?) sashimi and raw shrimps. The shrimps were still quite active and jumped around even though they were dead… This area is called Taean-gun and by the fish restaurants is a long footbridge to the mainland north of Anmyeondo.
Our next stop was Anmyeonam, a temple by and on the sea. Walking onto the grounds, the main temple complex was more like a pagoda. Around there were lots of cool looking statues of chess playing monks/Buddhas and zodiac animals praying to Buddha. To get to the floating temple, we walked down to the sea and had to cross a rickety wooden walkway which is designed to float at high-tide with attached polystyrene and empty plastic barrel floats. Quite an adventure! The temple was starting to move a little as the tide came in. On the way back we saw lots of mean looking, red-clawed crabs and other jumping creatures hiding out on the mud; they kept Romana busy for ages.
All in all, a fun afternoon.
