Today was wet! So what are the best things to do? A few art galleries, a butterfly park, and a trip to the idyllic Darangi village. Namhae is a quiet and pretty island on the south coast of Korea, with Yeosu on the west and Tongyeong on the east. I spent a four days on Namhae-do, and here’s what I got up to!
Bread Mell 남해제과 브레드멜, Cute Local Bakery
Yep, a rainy day ahead, but fortunately, I’d made a rough plan of action. My first stop was a bakery I’d seen a few days ago in the village near the guesthouse: Bread Mell (남해제과 브레드멜). They specialise in small cakes shaped like fish and garlic. The whole interior was super cute and the cake was nice. They only served cold brew coffee in small bottles that you add to hot or cold water. I came back on the final day to get some as souvenirs.
Then I wandered a little bit around the village and found a small park with a stone building and bamboo trees.
Ootche Art 옻채아트
I drove north along the west coast to a very small gallery call Ootche Art (옻채아트). By this time, the rain and wind was getting very strong! I don’t think the owners were expecting any visitors today! I got a ticket from the electronic kiosk, then looked at the selection of paintings in the small room. A bit later the male owner came in a talked a little about the art; they were all pieces he had bought from mainly Korean artists. I went up to the roof just to see, then left as there wasn’t too much else to see.
Jeongwon Raw Fish Restaurant
I drove south along the west coast to Janghang Beach (장항해수풀장) and stopped at Jeongwon Raw fish Restaurant (정원회식당). I had raw fish on rice, with lots of side dishes, including a small grilled fish. Very nice! It was a bit to nasty outside to visit the beach so I set off to my next planned destination.
Baraegil Small Art Gallery 바래길작은미술관
This was a small gallery but with more rooms than expected. It was showing the water colours of a local artist and I found myself quite moved by the pieces. They were pictures of fruit, trees and other plants. I think the artist herself was manning the door.
Butterfly Eco Park 나비생태공원나비생태관
I drove a long way east to this park. It was set amongst the mountains and the rain and the mist made it look lovely outside. The museum part housed lots of displayed dead bugs of various kinds; quite fascinating actually. The butterfly house had a few white butterflies floating around. Less than I was expecting. Interesting nonetheless. The even had a small reptile collection! I waled around the grounds afterwards, along a small trail into some trees.
Daraengi Village 다랭이
I went there in the early evening, then again the next day and posted about it in another post.
After leaving the village, I bought some supplies for the evening at Emart24, then went to my guesthouse to eat and relax. I took some more photos wandering the village and fields.
The best things to do on a rainy day in Namhae!
